Addie A Gutchess
Univ. of Michigan
1909 |
Gutchess, (née Armstrong),
Sarah
Adelaide “Addie”, Class of 1879, b. 1862 Port Byron, NY dau of Niram and Sarah Williams
Armstrong; Educator; Michigan Univ. '09 A.B. Literature; A.M. English,
Philosophy (Monroe, Cunningham, Creighton); Yale Univ. '21 B.A. English;
Cornell Graduate Classes '19, ‘26, ‘30; Assist. Principal HS Sioux City, IA '84; Preceptress Port Byron Free Academy Port Byron, NY '84 and Assist. Preceptress '86; Teacher Gutchess Business College
Detroit, MI; Asst. Principal Gutchess Business College Bridgeport, CT '11;
English teacher Bridgeport High School, now Central High '22-'33; model for
lifelong learning having enrolled in graduate courses at Cornell University at
age 68; retired at age 71; writing her will before the turn of the century, Addie bequeathed $300.00 to the library of her beloved
Port Byron Free Academy. By the time she passed over a half century later, the academy had been lost to fire. In 1959 her gift was accepted by the Port Byron Central School. ($300.00 in 1959 would have the equivalent purchase power of $2,360.00 as of 2012
based on the consumer price index). In 1963 her gift was used to purchase 100 books for the Central School library.
According to Addie, her father's first name Niram was a contraction of the name Adoniram, in honor of Adoniram Judson, a famous Baptist missionary to India. In 1941 at the alumni banquet, being the oldest in attendance, at age 79 she said:
"There are two kinds of humans -- they are infants as
long as they can learn; after that they are old fogeys. When I reach the
latter classification, you may scratch me off your roll".
Her words truly reflect her
philosophy toward lifelong learning. In Addie's words, she was
"scratched off" the roll in 1957 when she died at age 95. She
is buried with her husband Stephen (see bio below) at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery,
Port Byron, NY.
